God made man from dirt. He did not make a mud pie; He made a man. He created a body from the soil. Before God breathed life into Adam, the body in essence was a corpse. A human body without life is a corpse. We rightly consider resurrection as a miracle from God. The first man was brought to life just as the Second Adam (Jesus the Messiah) was brought back to life through the lifegiving power of God. God raised Adam from the dirt.
When God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, he became a living soul. He was the apex of all creation. Everything earthly was subservient to him and eventually his offspring.
In Adam was the genetics of all individuals of humanity. Every man and woman would be from his lineage. All who would ever be conceived was literally in him. The bodily destiny of the world was carried by his DNA.
The first man Adam was the lonely man on the planet for a while. He was naked but not afraid, for he was blessed and with God. He had all there was to have. There were no malls, Walmart, or Amazon, yet he had all he needed. Life was good but not yet complete because God would make him a helpmate from his own body made of dirt.
God put Adam to sleep and took a portion of his body, a rib, and formed a woman. Adam’s counterpart to reproduction and life was the first woman Eve. She came from him and then came to him. When he woke from his sleep, seeing Eve, surely he said “Wow!”
God told them to be fruitful and multiply in the earth. Adam surely thought that was a great idea and Eve surely smiled. They were told to fill, subdue, and dominate the earth. God invented sex and the primary function is reproduction. Children are conceived and reared in enjoyment. God made sex pleasurable because He wanted to encourage reproduction.
“Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth” (Genesis 1:28 NKJV).
God made sex pleasurable and intimate because the man and woman were not only producing a baby but creating a family that would be the building block of any healthy society. As goes the family, so goes the society [Folks in marbled halls and ivy-covered brick buildings need to learn this simple lesson.] Every human life is treasured in the heart of God. God loves life and he made the way into life as a way of love. There are no good substitutes for God’s plan.
Adam was raised from the dust and Eve was taken from his side. The rest of us were birthed from their loins. So began the human race. We were brought forth in blood and water with skin and bones and with the breath of God in our nostrils.
God help us to return to our moorings of life. “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (Words of Jesus, John 14:6 NKJV).
