Over two years ago, I was lying on an emergency room bed and upon reading my EKG, the medical staff said, “You are having a heart attack right now!” They made short work of prepping me for a heart catherization and one stent and twenty-seven months later I am doing well. In that moment, I had a deep, profound sense of peace. Live or die, I was at peace with God.

If I’m travelling on the road and dog tired, the “Vacancy” sign in the motel window promises a hot shower and a bed with clean sheets. On the interstate to somewhere the “Cracker Barrel sign in two miles” puts hope in my stomach and cheers me on to the next exit. But what about rest for my soul?

When I get up in the morning and look in the mirror, I see the man who gives me the most trouble in life—ME! It would be easier to blame my parents, my wife, my siblings, my co-workers, or society in general, but I need to take responsibility for my own failures, brokenness, and, yes, sin.

Do you have a speck in your eye? My eye is feeling a little scratchy! Jesus talked about people having specks and planks in their eyes. These specks and planks can cause a lot of “speckulation” about other people.

I remember watching action-hero cartoons as a child and the general theme would be a bad guy wanting control over the world and a super-hero good guy would save the day. The same plot repeated itself in every show; the bad guy almost prevailed but in the end the good guy saves the world. What works in the fantasy world does not always play out in the real world. Most of us are apprehensive about the future.

The basic unit of any society is the home. Many of our problems in society are caused by the breakdown of the home. Home is where the problems begin, and it is where the solutions begin. The talking heads in our country like to ignore the operation manual (The Bible) and refit society according to our brokenness. This is like trying to build a house on sand.

One of our big projects every year is providing school uniforms and books for our students in Haiti. God has blessed us with some great partners; we received and transferred the needed funds in July. Praise the name of Jesus! We thank each one of you who helped with this. School will be starting on August 12th in Haiti which is earlier than usual, so your timely and generous giving was a special blessing this year.

America was once the poster child of free thought and free speech. It seems that the greatest proponents of free speech in our history were those in government, academia, and the press. In recent years they appear to be increasingly the ones who want to silence those who disagree with them. People want to fortify their own narratives than to formulate real solutions. At least that’s my observation.

Imagine being lost on a remote mountainside with that feeling of desperation closing in on you when all hope is gone. Then just around a boulder you see a “cairn”. A cairn you say! Yes, it is an unnatural stack of stones left by a former traveler showing you the way.

This morning as I was praying, I prayed, “Lord, I want to add one more voice [mine] to the many voices bringing you glory today.” It was then my mind began to think of the “one”. I am only one, you also are only one, yet Christ who died for all, still loves the one.
