How to Make Sense of Nonsense?

The short answer to my title question is, “You can’t!” We all have spent time racking our brains about something so absurd and coming to no conclusion to our question of “Why?”

A stranger with whom you have no quarrel keys your car with a long scratch. You watch the news where a young child was playing in their room when a stray bullet sends the child to Heaven and the perpetrator to jail and perhaps to Hell. The horrors of war fill our screens and you and I collectively scream, “WHY??”

Why? It is impossible to make sense of nonsense, that is why it is called “none-sense”. The world is full of nonsense from those who roam the streets looking for trouble, to those sitting in seats of power making trouble. Almost every square foot of dirt on the earth has been fought over and bought with the blood of others.

Most of us in this world, just want a simple, peaceful life. We don’t ask for much. We would like to have a soft bed, at least two good meals per day, a hot cup of coffee in the morning, and a piece of peanut butter pie every once and a while, and someone to love us.

We would love to see our children grow up and make a descent life for themselves. A million dollars is not what we are after. You can keep your mansion and your 100,000-dollar car. We enjoy the blessing of a family meal where everyone at the table takes their fill. A warm house in the winter and a cool watermelon on the 4th of July is all we ask.

Do the tyrants of the world not realize that the hell they invent for a day is the Hell they will inherit forever? Surely, they are delusional to think they will reign forever and over all? Their beating heart will one day stop, and they will stand before the Judge of All the Earth—God Almighty! There, their lips will quiver, and their knees will buckle as the Wrath of God will melt their misguided arrogance into a puddle of regret too late.

No, you cannot make sense of nonsense because it makes no sense. The enemy of God and of God’s creation, the devil himself is bent on havoc. He seeks a willing, power starved puppet to whom he can attach his myriad of strings to act out his evil nonsense on all God loves. This is about as close as I can come to making sense of nonsense.

“What do we do?” you ask. In the middle of the chaotic nonsense, what do we do? How do you fight the nonsense? MAKE SENSE! The old timers of my generation would sometimes say, “Act like you got some sense!” We would straighten up even for a little bit.

What do we need to do? In the midst of chaos, be calm. As ignorance prevails, use understanding and wisdom. As the world is hell-bent on evil, be righteous as a clay-being can be. As lies spread like wildfires, speak the truth. As others hate, you love. When tyrants want you to bow, stand tall. Do not follow the crowd, follow the Savior!

We live in a time some say is the beginning of the end. Maybe so, but I don’t know. All I know, I serve the God who started the beginning, and He will say when it is to end. My job is not to predict, but to follow Him in His way, live in His light, love like His heart, and speak His Truth.

Nonsense may make the news today, but it will not prevail forever. There is an end to nonsense you can be sure.

“He who troubles his own house will inherit the wind, And the fool will be servant to the wise of heart” (Proverbs 11:29 NKJV).

“A wise man fears and departs from evil, But a fool rages and is self-confident” (Proverbs 14:16 NKJV).

“And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18 KJV).

“And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever./ Inasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold-the great God has made known to the king what will come to pass after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation is sure” Daniel 2:44-45 NKJV).

Keep believing, keep praying, keep loving, keep serving! “Act like you got some sense”, even when nonsense seems to prevail. Stay strong!

Yours on the Journey,

Harry L. Whitt

    1. Thanks so much RuthAnne. I appreciate your encouraging comment. Yes, “mayhem” is an appropriate term for the world today. The Kingdom of God is the calm in the storm.
