Light of the World
Jesus said He was the light of the world, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” (John 8:12 NKJV).
These statements on the surface may seem to be light and cheery; something to put on a decorative poster or on a greeting card. Yet the underlying truth to this statement belies a dark truth—we live in a dark world. The evening news reports mostly on the darkness; a car-bombing, an outbreak of cholera in a third world country, a flu epidemic here, or another war there. DARKNESS!!
Reality often becomes lost in our “Christianeze” terms and sayings. Too often we just repeat what someone has said and way too often our sayings get morphed into a false theology. Something repeated over and over gets engrained in our culture and it becomes a pseudo-truth of sorts.
As we enter a New Year and time of introspection, we should think about a new season of increase. Often when discussions begin about increase we naturally go the material side of things but we also need to think of increase as it relates to the Kingdom of God. We, as the Body of Christ, are an outpost of the Kingdom of God in this world.
‘Twas the Night of the Advent
‘Twas the night of the Advent, when all in the house,
Not a man was secure, not even his spouse;
Stories of the Torah were told with great care,
In hopes that Yahweh would be merciful and fair;
Thanks for Nothing, God!!
The phrase “Thanks for Nothing” is often used as a sharp rebuke to someone for not meeting our expectations. I would like to twist the usual use of the phrase just a little because we should thank God for a few “nothings”.
I heard a story about a mother and her small daughter back in the day before car seat laws. The little girl was standing up in the seat as her mother drove and the mom told her daughter several times to sit down. Finally, the mother became more adamant telling her daughter to sit down. Knowing that her mother meant business, the child reluctantly sat down but told her mother, “I’m sitting down but in my heart I’m standing up!” I imagine many of us are like this, we comply with certain laws or guidelines but in our hearts we are somewhere in the realm of compliance in the spirit of rebellion.
