The uncertainties of life would drive a sane person mad if they obsessed about it. We tend to tuck the doubts and fears in a back corner of our minds so we can have (as my Appalachian kindred would say) “walking around sense”.

My grandson and I went out a few nights ago and cooked up a little hot chocolate on a campfire. While sitting around the fire, the smoke seemed to chase us. We would move our camp chairs to escape the smoke and you know where the smoke went next, right? Yep, we were like smoke magnets. When we went back inside for the night, we smelled like we had been roasted.
In the world we live in, the smoke seems to be chasing us. It’s hard to get away from the clamor of the world.

I remember watching action-hero cartoons as a child and the general theme would be a bad guy wanting control over the world and a super-hero good guy would save the day. The same plot repeated itself in every show; the bad guy almost prevailed but in the end the good guy saves the world. What works in the fantasy world does not always play out in the real world. Most of us are apprehensive about the future.

If you have ever cared for children, you realize how short their attention span and how elusive their contentment. If you have ever supervised or worked with adults, you realize how very few children grow up. Why are people discontented? That’s a million dollar question that can be answered with a nickel answer. Selfish pursuit of an evaporating cloud!

Baskin-Robbins has 31 different flavors of ice cream; three will do. I have read that there are over a thousand different flavors of ice cream. A good question might be, “Why do we have to complicate things?” In the early years of my childhood, I thought that vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry were the only flavors on the planet, and I was good with that.

I was watching a news show this past week, when the host and a guest briefly debated about the color of Jesus. WHO CARES! So what, does it really matter if Jesus is black, white, brown, red, or yellow?!

In 1964, I was a fourth grader in an all-white elementary school in Alabama when we had two African American girls become part of our class as desegregation reached our little school. I was a big-eyed nine year old wondering what to make of it all.

There are some striking similarities in the spiritual implications of Isaac and Jesus. I am sure their personalities were very different. Jesus, the Son of God taking his brief journey on earth was confident of His mission given by His Heavenly Father. Isaac on the other hand does not come across as the spiritual man of faith like his father Abraham, yet he was a link in the eternal blessing culminating in the Messiah, Jesus.
So let’s look at the comparison between Isaac and Jesus:
