A Tsunami of Conviction

Powerful word from fellow blogger and sister in Christ, RuthAnne Henley. This is what America needs.

Last night, as if in a dream, my spirit went walking along the shoreline. I looked out at the wide expanse of the ocean, and it seemed I could see the waters recede. The rocky depths were exposed. I heard a voice praying, and realized it was my own.

“Father, in Jesus’ name, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, send a tsunami of conviction rushing over this nation and cause us to see that the rebellion seething among us is contrived by spiritual forces. Open our eyes to see that it is the enemy who is turning us against each other. Help us to understand that it is not a matter of one camp or party rising against another, but we are raising our fists and slinging our curses into Your holy face. It is against You that we are raging. Let that knowledge come surging over us…

Jimmy Carter was president of the United States from 1977 to 1981. He was a peanut farmer from Georgia, and he tried to be a little folksy relating to the common man. I remember a few details of his trip to California where he wanted to stay in a private home instead of a fancy hotel. [This blog is not about Jimmy Carter, please read to the end!]

. This ministry touches the lives of about 2500 people each week with spiritual bread and about 500 people each week with physical bread. Our method of fundraising is simply through prayer and seeking to be close to the heart of Jesus. God has blessed us through His wonderful people for 28 years. Thank you all!!!

True Conversion

If I remember the story correctly, a man in conversation with the famous evangelist D. L. Moody, pointed to a drunken man on the street and said, “Moody, isn’t that one of your converts?” Moody replied, “Yes, that looks like one of my converts.” Implying that the work of man does not change an individual but only a true work of grace by Christ can convert.

Words With Action

The words that a person speaks does not really define who they are but what they do is a true indicator of who they are.

Many in our present culture are under the illusion they can change the world by posting a Tweet in 280 characters or a Facebook meme while sipping on a mocha latte. It takes a little more action than that!

Tag Along With Me to Jail

I have been involved in local jail ministry for the most part of thirty years. It is not glorious work. It is not scary as some might think. I have never felt threatened and most of the guys are usually respectable and appreciative.

The jail we visit is set up like a dormitory with bunks on two sides and tables in the middle. Lately, our jail ministry team has been alternating weeks and I have been going alone twice per month.

There is nothing fancy of what we do. No fanfare, no bells and whistles. Just an old buzzard of a preacher telling the story of Jesus to a bunch of jail birds.

Pain Hurts!!!

We have a skillet with a removeable rubber grip on the handle so you can use the skillet in the oven. This week we cooked some garden fresh yellow squash with slices of onion sprinkled in olive oil in that skillet. Shortly after it was removed from the oven, I was going to move it and without thinking I grabbed the hot handle without a pot holder. Ouch! It took a nano-second for me to let go. I put my hand under tap water and I was fine. Pain hurts but it helped me to let go!

Pathway Outreach Ministries

I did a quick calculation the morning as I wrote this update, and discovered I have written some 336 or so monthly updates in the life of Pathway Outreach. It is more than meets the eye with the writing, the printing, the folding, the stuffing, and the mailing. I often struggle with the updates, because I know I need to inform our supporters of the work but then, there is the aspect of promotion, of which I am not comfortable. We rarely even ask for money unless it is for a special project. Our strategy is to stay close to the heart of Jesus, pray, let people know what we are trying to do, and ultimately put our faith in Jesus and trust Him.

Disappointment

I suppose disappointment is a human condition that affects us all. We often wallow in the disappointment in ourselves and boil over our emotions in the disappointment of others.

There is a portion of scripture I often default to in times of disappointment that shakes me back into reality. It is in Proverbs 13:12a (NKJV), “Hope deferred makes the heart sick…” My paraphrase is, “Expectations not met, breaks the heart.”

Where Do We Go From Here?

PRAY FOR THE FAMILIES OF UVALDE, TEXAS!

It is horrible thing when two neighbors have a quarrel, and one kills the other. It is so unthinkable when an evil person kills at random one or more who are innocent and vulnerable with whom he had no quarrel. It is unthinkable because normal, descent folks just cannot imagine why anyone would do such a thing—it is unthinkable.

There is the usual rush to put a “why” on the “what”. Most of us who have an ounce of compassion first think about those in our lives who approximate the same age as the victims, then a deep sick feeling wells up in our souls to the point we quickly change the channel in our mind to something less painful. We whisper a prayer for the hurting while our souls scream, “WHY?”
