Finding Hope in Darkness: Embracing the Light

A small speck of light in the midst of darkness brings hope. Those lost and smothered in absolute darkness with no source of light, hope for a flicker of light. They stumble around a boulder and then a streak of light winks at them through a crack. Hope soars in their hearts and dismay flees.

The world is a dark place with a lot of noise. People stumble along as if darkness is the norm. They walk in cadence to the racket which has no tune. Today, it is this. Tomorrow, it is that. Confusion reigns and everyone acts if it all makes sense while they laugh with the crowd.

In the wee-hours of the morning, individuals from the crowd sleek off to the solitude of themselves. The darkness grows denser and the tune fades. The silence is deafening. The beating of their heart reveals a rhythm from somewhere beyond. They close their eyes and pray to someone they do not know to give them the reprieve of unconscious sleep.

The morning breaks to another day. As the sun rises in the east, the darkness in their heart yearns for light from the source of truth. Yet the scales on their eyes refuse even the hint of a life beyond their doubt. When they encounter a light-bearer, they often snicker to prove themselves wise in their foolishness.

Most live through one hell to inherit another. They stumble through their earthly journey never acknowledging the light, much less receiving it. At their last heartbeat in darkness, suddenly that are consumed in darkness that can be felt. They are saturated in the greatest misery of being alone in fiery darkness. So, this must be Hell.

On the other hand, there are the few who veer from behind the boulder to perceive the break of light. Rather than refusing the Light, they answer the Light with an embrace of faith.

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing,
but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
1 Corinthians 1:18 NKJV

The cross of Christ is foolishness to those who walk in darkness. It can’t be logically discerned but it must be embraced as revealed truth. To those being spiritually resurrected from the dead, the Gospel is the breaking forth of illuminated truth. It can’t be explained but believed.

Pontius Pilate stood just feet away from Jesus Christ and asked Him two questions, “Are You a king then?” and “What is truth?”

Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no fault in Him at all. (John 18:37-38 NKJV, emphasis mine)

Pilate found no fault in Jesus. He also did not find the source of all truth standing within sound of His voice.

I can’t convince anyone out of Hell and into Heaven. I can’t sell you the truth of the Gospel as a commodity. Even if I win the debate, if you do not believe by revelation of the truth, my arguments are pointless.

The thief on the cross heard no preaching. He read no books. At first, He ridiculed Jesus as another unbelievable preacher. Then something happened. A light broke through the crack in his heart. He saw Jesus as He was sent to be seen. The Savior of lost souls. The Light in the darkness. The Truth that scatters all lies. The Lord to whom submission seems wise. The Merciful One who forgives sin and gives eternal life. Then he believed and confessed.

Then he [the thief on the cross] said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.” (Luke 23:42-43 NKJV)

Please do not dismiss Jesus, the Light of the World. He is shining bright just beyond the crack of doubt. Believe and Receive.

I am the light of the world.
He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness,
but have the light of life.
John 8:12 NKJV
