Certainty of God

The uncertainties of life would drive a sane person mad if they obsessed about it. We tend to tuck the doubts and fears in a back corner of our minds so we can have (as my Appalachian kindred would say) “walking around sense”.

There is an old saying that states, “The only thing certain in life is death and taxes!” The first part of that statement stands true as everyone without fail who were born at least 120 years ago have all died (with a few Biblical exceptions). And the second part of the statement continues to be true as the political elites of all societies enjoy spending other people’s hard-earned money.

This morning as I was praying, my prayers of praise turned to the Certainty of God. He does not change. He is unwavering and bound in certainty by His Word, His truth, and His wisdom.

As I continued to pray, I thought of the variables in my life. Everything that I value and love in earthly materials, human relationships, and physical attributes are all variables—they could vanish in a moment. My own earthly existence is only one breath, one heartbeat, and one brain wave from eternity.

My parents who were such an integral part of my life for almost five decades have been gone from this earth for over a decade and half. If the world stands a few more years, the house I have lived in for over forty years will eventually go back to a termite mound.

Please, don’t leave this dreary discussion just yet! There is Certainty with God!

I am not distraught with life nor depressed by the variables of life because I am in a relationship with an Eternal God through the death and resurrection of His Son Jesus.

This world often makes no sense at all but resting in the wisdom of God brings clarity of thought. The brevity of earthly life for those I love and myself does not lead to despair, for our hope is in eternal life. The dust of things I hold in my hand will be exchanged for an eternal permanence that does not rust, rot, ruin, or is robbed.

Jesus made this statement about Himself, “Have you not even read this Scripture: ‘The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone’” (Mark 12:10 NKJV).

He speaks of Himself as the chief cornerstone. The Rock of all rocks. He is unwavering. He is immoveable. He is a non-variable in a fluid and unstable world.

As the world moans, rages, and shakes, we take solace in the Word of God and the reality of the yet unseen.

Psalms 46:1-11 NKJV
(1) God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.
(2) Therefore we will not fear, Even though the earth be removed, And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
(3) Though its waters roar and be troubled, Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah
(4) There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God, The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High.
(5) God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved; God shall help her, just at the break of dawn.
(6) The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved; He uttered His voice, the earth melted.
(7) The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah
(8) Come, behold the works of the LORD, Who has made desolations in the earth.
(9) He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariot in the fire.
(10) Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!
(11) The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

Rest, rejoice, and take refuge in the Certainty of God.
